Private care or train from Nice, France to Cinque Terre?

My husband and I will be travelling from Nice, France to Cinque Terre(staying in Vernazza). I was thinking it would be fun to get a private car from Nice to Geona, Italy and spend the afternoon sightseeing/lunch. If there another city/town that we should explore please suggest! Then we could take the train to Cinque Terre. The other option is to take the train from Nice to Cinque Terre. All suggestions/comments welcomed!!

We took the train from Nice to Cinque Terre and it stopped in Genoa (changed trains there)... Loved the whole ride. Very easy. So you could get off for awhile and then continue to CT
