Privacy with new Delta screen system

I just flew Delta this past weekend (Comfort+, SFO-MSP) and both ways we had planes with the new entertainment system.
Here is my problem with it: the seats were already pre-programmed with our first name and first 3 letters of last name on screen with an option to login with QR code or type password. Our minor child's seat had my husband's name since she was under his ticket.

I actually had traded seats with my husband so my screen had his name on it. You have the option to login or click "this is not me". But I don't like that it was already pre-programmed. What if I had traded seats with a stranger, or I don't want to share my name?

The idea is that if you login, you can watch a movie in one flight and continue where you left off on another flight, and have information there on screen about your account which is big and visible to seats next to your or behind/perpendicular. I am one usually careful about privacy so I clicked "I'm someone else" so it removed the name from screen. Maybe that is how it works with other airlines/first class but I didn't enjoy it.

According to the flight attendant, the screens automatically log out once the flight is complete.

How do you feel about it?

I'm a neo-luddite so no, I wouldn't like it. But before I go full rant, could you see anyone's personally identifiable information when you looked over a seat, or across a seat or next to you? I ask only because sometimes, you really can't read anything clearly on someone else's screen at an angle.

"...have information there on screen about your account..."

Joy, may I ask what type of information shows up on the screen beyond the name?
How is this different than how names have traditionally been listed on a gate monitor for standby passengers?
I have a long name, so the last three letters of my surname aren't going to provide anyone with much of a clue to my full name.

When you arrive at your seat, it has your first name in large font so it’s easily readable. I should have taken some pictures to remember details.
Screen also has your last name is small font with 3 letters. For example, Jack Smith would have "Jack" in large font, and in smaller font “Smi***”. And a QR code for you to login using the app, but they also had a login button. I think there was also an option to type your birthdate to login. My husband logged on to test it out with QR code. Once logged on, it showed his status, member since year and how many miles he has.

My kid next to me could easily read the info. People a row behind perpendicular probably could read the first name easily.
Once logged on, you can access whatever you had saved before I imagine like movies watched.

And the new system doesn't give you the small tiles for choosing a movie, only large tiles which is a pain as you have to keep scrolling to see all options.

Just found this on Delta website: https://news.delta.com/deltas-wi-fi-revolution-hits-1000th-aircraft-bringing-personalized-entertainment-and-more-every

Did you know? SkyMiles Members can now enjoy an even more personalized experience with Delta Sync. If you’re a recognized SkyMiles Member, your seatback screen will greet you by name – just enter your birthdate (month and day) to unlock tailored entertainment, exclusive offers and more. It’s never been easier to connect and make the journey uniquely yours.

So someone can easily logon to your account with your birthday MMDD!

Rachael - How is this different than how names have traditionally been listed on a gate monitor for standby passengers?

I think at the gate it only shows 3 letters of last name. The screen had the full first name (I have a long first name), and you can be associated with the name on screen. If you don't want to give your first name to a random stranger next to you, well, it's there on the screen as you click on it.

I noticed this when I flew last month. I remember logging out right away. It was a short flight so I wasn't going to finish a movie.

I think there's a workaround. On the app go to Profile and Seatback Preferences and uncheck the boxes under Delta Sync Seatback Preferences.

I experienced this on my recent Delta domestic flight, too, as a solo traveler. I don't typically use the airline entertainment anyway, but do like their Skymies wifi.
I am also very careful with my online information and don't have social media. It would be better if Delta let you opt out in settings in their app before travel? I haven't checked if it's there.
I guess I'd rather have some not likely hacker seat neighbor sort of know my name than all the personal information of mine that I don't know about that's likely floating about the web! I don't like wearing a name tag when I volunteer, either, but never thought about refusing until now! Interesting (albeit disturbing) how information is a slippery slope...or depending on how it's displayed.

Thanks, Mary! I just disabled it. Hope it works.

At the gate, standby passengers and those awaiting seat assignments or upgrades are listed by three letters of last name and first two of first.

So Joy's hypothetical Jack Smith is shown on the screens in the gate area as :

SMI/JA
