Hello and thanks in advance for your suggestions and advice. We're looking to get premium economy tickets r/t from NYC to Rome in May2019. I'm seeing that American Airlines is showing tickets for less than $900. Does that seem like a good price? It seems early to purchase them now, but since there are relatively few premium economy seats available, is it too early? We haven't used premium economy yet and are wondering if it's worth the additional cost. Any suggestions are most welcome.
Yes and yes unless you are 5-2". $900 from the midwest would be very good. From NY, I don't know as I always thought you could get great prices from NY because of all the flights. However, if it was me, I would grab it and not look back. May isn't quite prime time but it is getting close. The probability of the price going higher is greater than the probability of it going lower.
If it's for true premium economy like you see in foreign carriers meaning separate cabin; wider seats, longer pitch than economy; separate check in; better menu than coach; greater video/music options than economy, then $900 is a good deal. If it's akin to United's Economy Plus or Delta Comfort which is essentially economy service but with a few more inches of pitch, then it's not a great deal.
Just be careful when looking for fares. In my experience google flights and kayak both lump true premium economy (like Virgin Atlantic, British Air) with the extra legroom seats in conventional economy.
If you can get premium economy on Virgin for a decent price, do it. They even serve a different meal in premium economy than in coach.
Thanks so much for your suggestions. The flight I'm looking at is AA236. Looks like it's a Boeing 777 but seatguru shows 2 different 777s. How do I know which aircraft is this flight and if it's true premium economy?
Seat guru shows two variants of the 777-200. If you click thru on V2 you will see the lay out for the premium economy cabin. It’s rows 13-15 and 8 seats across in a 2-4-2 configuration. Regular economy is 10 across in a 3-4-3 configuration. Check that against what you see from AA when you’re booking.

Thanks, again. Appreciate your input.
And the sad truth -- no matter how carefully you choose your flights for best type of plane, the airline may do an equipment change at any time. And with it, your finely-selected seat assignment.
So keep checking after you make the reservation, and consider every change that is proposed.
