Pre-Booking and Purchasing Train Tickets - What If?....

My husband, daughters and I will be traveling to Europe in a few weeks. We'll stay in Munich for a few days, followed by stays in Innsbruck, Venice, Vienna and then back to Munich - spending at least two nights in each place.

We plan to travel by train between cities - and per trip tickets make more $ sense than a pass. Each set of tickets I've selected are refundable up to the day before that leg of the trip -so I'm good there. My question is - what happens if we'd miss a train? I'm assuming we'd be out of the full cost of that ticket - or would we be able to use what we've already paid towards the price of a later train?

Also, I'm assuming that we should purchase tickets for all legs of our trip now and that we should print out our tickets vs. using the app?

Thanks!

Discounted advance purchase tickets are generally not refundable. But why would you miss a train? You don't seem to worry about missing airline flights, and trains are a whole lot less complicated than flights. Just think of them as flights and be at the the station 20 minutes before departure time and you will be fine.

IF the train is at fault for the miss -- arrived late (about the only reason) for a connection. Take you ticket to the ticket and they will give you a new ticket for the next appropriate train. If you are late and miss the train, go buy a new ticket if a discount ticket with restrictions. If a full fare, then you should be able to exchange it. In Italy, I think you have 90 minutes after you miss the train with a full fare (called Base in Italy) ticket.

If you miss a train because of a delayed previous train you just take the next train. Nothing else to do.
If you miss a train because you were too late at the station it depends.
- If you have a flexible ticket you also just take another train. Nothing else to do usually. Except in Italy where long distance trains have compulsory reservations, and you will need to exchange your ticket.
- If your ticket is not flexible, well look at the fine print. It varies by network. You are traveling on the German, Austrian and Italian railways. They all have their own fare rules.
