Prague --> Vienna --> Bratislava --> budapest --> Krakow train info

I am planning on traveling to these cities in April by train. Although it is very difficult to figure out prices on train travel in parts of Europe. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on traveling between these destinations?

Is it cheaper to book in advance (is so where to buy tickets), or just book at the station when you arrive in each city?

Thanks for your feedback and help!

You need to do research on which rail passes will be useful for you. You may need more than one. I doubt there will be a cost advantage for you in buying them.

Based on my experience in RR travel I would buy point2point tickets at the RR station the day before you travel.

In that way you can also be more flexible if you want to change plans.

Verifying what Carl wrote, for most traveler's needs, it's usually cheaper to buy point-to-point than a rail pass in eastern Europe.

If you can commit well in advance to a specific date and time, you can get a SparSchiene fare as low as €19 for Prague-Vienna. Book by phoning the Austrian Rail call center. See here. The standard 2nd class fare is €58.20.

We used the Eastern Europe rail pass in August, 2007, for the cities you named. It worked really well. We only got a reservation when we thought it was a popular route or the train staff recommended it. See http://www.ricksteves.com/rail/easterneurope.htm

Compare point2point prices as described above in previous posts.

Happy travels.
