Some friends and I (probably 4-5 total) are flying into Prague on Sep 1 and out of Zurich on Sep 12. We will spend a number of days in Prague, some time in southern Germany (Nuremburg, Munich, Neuschwanstein, etc...) and ending up in Switzerland (still figuring out exactly where we will go). We don't have our exact itinerary figured out yet. Based on the blogs, it seems that renting a car can be a hassle when traveling through different countries. What is the best way for me to travel from one place to the next? If Eurail is the best way, what is the best Eurail pass to get?
Eurail is not a train but a travel agency, Generally trains are the more convenient way to go unless you are really trying to get off the beaten path. But for the little bit that you hinted at the train may be best. You have to do your homework to determine if a pass is cheaper. With rail passes charging for seat reservations and the advance purchase discounts often available with the the trains, it can be difficult to make a rail pass pay off.
Look for discount tickets and regional passes available online to save a lot versus a rail pass. For instance, the Bahn intercity bus is the fastest way to get from Prague to Nürnberg and, with advance purchase from the German Rail website, costs as little as €19 per person. From Nürnberg, you can get to Munich for €29 (total, for all, up to 5, of you) with a Bayern-Ticket. A one day side trip to Neuschwanstein would also cost 29 for the five of you with another Bayern-Ticket. Finally, Munich to Zurich, or most other places in Switzerland, is as low as €39 per person with another advance purchase Europa-Spezial ticket from the Bahn.
