Prague to Munich -- Bus/Train or Train Only

Does anyone have advice on getting from Prague to Munich? The Bus/Train option is 4 hrs by bus, then 1 hour on the train. The train is 6 hours with a change. The all train trip is more expensive, but I'm thinking it may be more comfortable than 4 hours on a bus. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

"The all train trip is more expensive". If you can get hold of a Bayern-Böhmen Single ticket for €23 (single person) it will cover your travel from Pilsen to Munich on the train. A Czech Rail p-p ticket, purchasable in Prague for about €6 (in Czech Koruna) will cover your travel to Pilsen. That's ~€29, Prague to Munich. A sparpreis ticket for the bus/train combination is €34 at the least, when purchased in advance, with a non-refundable, train-specific ticket. For more than one person, there is a Bayern-Böhmen ticket for €33 for up to five people. Again, that covers you from Pilsen to Munich. Prague to Pilsen is €6 pP. Thus for two people, ~€45. The bus/train Sparpreis ticket would be €68. Getting a Bayern-Böhmen ticket? If you are going to be in Germany in advance of the Prague-Munich trip, you can purchase the Bayern-Böhmen ticket at any touch screen Bahn ticket automat. Or, in Bavaria, from any regional automat - press the button for Bayern-Ticket, then the number for the Bayern-Böhmen ticket. Be sure to specify the date. If you are not going to be in Germany, you can purchase it from the online Bahn Store (unfortunately only in German) on the Bahn.de website.

For the record, trains departing at 09:10 and 17:10 go directly to Munich. If you depart at 13:10, then you'll have to make a connection in Schwandorf.

Check Eurolines bus. They go directly from Prague to Munich, trip takes 5 hrs 20 min. and costs 32.84 Euro. They have a current special of 20.52 Euro. The bus usually leaves at a main railway station and arrives at or near a main railway station. I'm thinking of taking it my next trip and have heard that it's very comfortable. Also, I've heard that sometimes there's a first class available but not worth the price difference.

We did the bus/train combo to Prague from Munich last Christmas. It was OK - not as comfortable as a train but efficient. It is nonstop and operated by German rail. Has first and second class. With second class on top with a view. First class has an attendant and free coffee, tea, etc. The first class tickets allows you to use the First Class Lounge at the Nurenburg station with free beverages and restrooms.

Thanks for all the help and advice. This is the last train trip of our 3 week trip, so I will probable take the direct early train and upgrade to 1st class if a reasonalbe early rate is available 92 days out. Thanks, Mike

I did the DB bus/train combo via Nürnberg last year, and it was great! I was really paranoid about the connection, but we had plenty of time, since the bus got there early and the train was actually a bit late. The bus is one of those plush travel coaches, very comfortable and scenic.

The direct train is all regional. The Sparpreis tickets are only for a connection which includes a train of the Fernverkehr (ICE, IC, or EC). Ergo, Sparpreis tickets are not available for this route. Your best deal is the Bayern-Böhmen ticket (2nd cl only) which you could buy the day you travel, but probably not in Prague. For the all-train route, 1st class full fare is €98,60. For 1st class you would be better off with the advance purchase bus/train combo starting at €49.
