Prague to - Czesky Krumlov/Mauthausen : rent a car, drive, driver, train?

Evening - we will be heading from Prague to Czesky Krumlov for 2 nights 8 -10 May- debating with wife on how to get there. Looking for some guidance, is it worth driving or not, sights to see along the way, or just really a point to point drive. We do have a guide with a car meeting us in Linz for Mauthausen on 9 May. The experience at Mauthausen should be emotional as well.

-Do we drive from Prague? no issues renting a car, but unsure of parking in Czesky Krumlov, and looks to be about same amount of time as train

  • Do we train to Czesky Budejovice, then rent a car? Gives us flexibility to explore a bit, then relax on way to/from the area.

  • Do we train it non-stop to Czesky Krumlov instead?

  • Do we get a driver to take us both ways from Prague?

Thanks!

this is a duplicate question - other answers in the Czech Republic Forum

it is best to ask a question only in one place so the posters and you don't get confused trying to follow two threads

You can also take the bus from Prague to CK. It's a little less than 3 hours but you don't have to change trains. i think the train is farther away than the bus station. Either way you will need to get a taxi to drive you into town depending on where you are staying. I think that the center of town is closed to cars during the day. I don't remember seeing places where you could park a car if you drove. CK is a great place. Have fun.

Another option you might consider is taking the Ck Shuttle. We plan to use them from Vienna to CK and CK to Prague. Door to door service. Highly recommended by RS forum contributors. www.CKShuttle.cz.

** Edit: Wanted to mention we are staying 2 nights in CK. We booked a walking tour as well.

I used the CK shuttle to take us from Prague to Cesky Kromlov and back again with no problems. Make sure you spend the night in Cesky Kromlov, nights there are beautiful!

Thank you...I should have said we are not bus people, my wife enjoys driving in Europe and we would have rented a car.. Except for the ridiculous$800 one way drop off fees. We are staying in CK for 2 nights before returning to Prague.

Since we are going r/t Prague to CK, a cost of $175 for private shuttle each way is a bit onerous, and those $$ can be put to better use we think.

Looks like we are going to train to CK, or other option to CB and then renting a car at Hertz for 2 days, returning it to CB and train back to Prague.

Thank you.. We are still open to suggestions and options but that is it plan for now.

Just a note -- the "shared shuttle" service is not bad (and certainly not a "bus") and substantially cheaper than hiring a car and driver for a "private shuttle" for two. We found it more flexible than taking the train (train doesn't pick up and deliver to hotels.)

If you are going rt from Prague, why is there a one way drop off fee on a rental car? Drive the whole way.

Mauthausen is well enough laid out that you don't need a guide.

Lind is boring. Best sight is the nearby Wilhering Abbey.

We are coming from Bud/Vie. We can rent a car in Prg for 2 days to go to CK, cheaper than a shuttle ..begs the question on the drive from prg to CK....is there anything to see, do along the drive?
