Hi all- I am a young experienced solo traveler and I am embarking again for a trip in the spring. I intend to take budget flights for longer distances, which I have always had good experiences, but I am going from prague to budapest and easy jet does not fly this route. I have been told a train would be a good option, so I left out booking a hostel one night and figured I would book a night train.
I've looked on czech trains site and I think the fare will be cheap. Would it be better to wait until I'm there or can I purchase ahead of time? Also, I've heard the train stations are dodgy and I'm solo female so I don't want to get mugged at night. I live in NYC so I'm used to dodgy trains, but you know, I like to be safe abroad.
I usually buy ticket after I am in Europe. But that's for a day train. Sleeper train leaves Prague 5 minutes after midnight. The station was recently remodeled, it's well lit; I think watch your valuables and you should be OK. There is a little park in front of the station, locals call it Sherwood Forest but I think it looks more scary than it really is. Frequented by homeless and drunkards or both in one person. If you arrive to the station by Metro (subway) you would avoid Sherwood Forest. The subway gets you right into the main hall. Budapest Keleti station looks somewhat seedy but you will arrive around 8:30 am so that should be OK, too.
