I am contemplating a trip on the overnight train from Paris to Rome and wonder if anyone has experience with the power available (or not) in the sleepers? (I sleep with a CPAP which does not include a battery pack and requires plugging into an outlet.) Thank you
Karen, The title of your Thread says "Paris to London" while the text indicates "Paris to Rome". Could you clarify??? Regarding your question (and assuming you're referring to Paris to Rome), you may find it helpful to have a look at the excellent Man in Seat 61 website. The section on the night trains from Paris to Rome states "Each compartment has an upper, middle and lower bed and can be used for single, double or triple occupancy. Each bed comes with a soft pillow and duvet, an individual reading light and its own 220v 2-pin socket for laptops & mobiles." Is that the information you were looking for? The link to that page is: http://seat61.com/thello-train-from-paris-to-italy.htm#1-,%202-%20or%203-bed%20sleepers Happy travels!
Karen,, keep in mind, sometimes.. somethings don't work,, if the power outlet doesn't work will you be ok without using the Cpap machine for one night? If answer is no, then I would not take night train. The sleeping compartments fill up and if you in a one in a thousand chance get a cabin where power isn't working for whatever reason, they most likely will not be able to change your room. Also from what I understand those machines make a certain amount of noise so you definately will need a more expensive private cabin as opposed to the 4 or 6 bedded berths.
It has to be Paris to Rome as no one takes a night train between Paris and London - a night ferry - maybe.
Yes, it is the Paris to Rome train I was asking about!!! Not sure why I put London in the title (instead of Rome). Sorry for the confusion. Thank you for pointing out that things don't often work as they are supposed to....such a fact of life! This means I really must try to arrange some kind of battery backup for the CPAP. The last time I looked into this a few years ago, I was put off since prices for the battery packs sold by the CPAP vendors were pretty steep. But with the recent proliferation of portable electronics, there are probably many more options now for rechargeable battery packs and I might be able to find something somewhat economical that is not CPAP-specific but would work for my machine (which requires 12 V at 5.0 A). Another research project! Karen
Instead of a 15 hour train ride, that's pretty expensive and uncomfortable, why not fly on easyjet from Paris Orly to Rome Fiumicino in 1H50m. Seems to me to be a better use of vacation time. Fares are very reasonable if you buy as early as possible.
Just be sure to read their fine print on baggage.
I agree with Gerri/ The "romance" of the Orient Express type train travel is not going to be on that train.. lol
Hi Karen, I have a CPAP myself and when I go camping I can only use it when connected to a car battery because of the amps it draws.
If your CPAP has a rating of 5 amps, that means a 45 amp hour battery would only last 9 hours before it was flat – a 45 amp hour battery is a normal small car battery which will be quite heavy to carry around – I agree with the Gerri, jump on a plane, it will far less trouble.
