Possible Thanksgiving Shutdown

Something to consider: https://thehill.com/business/4297992-government-shutdown-thanksgiving-flights-faa-airports/

The government is days away from a Nov. 18 shutdown, which could force Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees and federal air traffic controllers to work without pay just as the busy Thanksgiving travel season begins.

Around 4.7 million people are expected to fly over the five-day period surrounding Thanksgiving, the highest projection in nearly two decades, according to a new forecast released Monday by AAA.

These are the busiest travel days of the year and could coincide with a government shutdown unless Congress comes together on a deal in the next few days. Absent some kind of new funding bill, the government would shut down on Saturday.

I didn't even think about this when I booked our flights this week. Thankfully we are due to come home Thursday night. Still, what a mess the whole thing is.

Keep in mind that the TSA and FAA air traffic controllers do have to work, but I expect there will be slowdowns

The situation is terrible. This ongoing conflict between the Far left and Far Right causes such grief for most of the population who are moderates.

Thanksgiving travel is usually challenging even at its best but now a possible shutdown to make it even worse.

We are in a quandry. We are suppose to fly to Boston for Thanksgiving tomorrow. However we're waiting for a biopsy report. If the report is bad news we're concerned that if we leave we won't be able to get back in time for surgery. I can tell myself that the FAA and TSA have to work and will receive backpay. But the 2019 shutdown caused chaos when the unpaid workers were understandably frustrated and called in sick.

Saw news report that this T-giving is projected to be the 3rd busiest EVER.

Even atheists are praying for good weather, to keep the misery to a minimum.

Wishing you a good outcome on that biopsy result, Trotter.

Trotter--I hope you got good news. Yes, the shutdown would be inconvenient, especially for situations like yours. My husband is retired military so we are watching closely as his paycheck would be affected.

It appears that the children we have elected to Congress have decided that maybe they should play well together for a few days and congress passed a funding bill that will avert the shutdown.

actually doing the job and passing a long-term funding budget etc. is above their skills that but you probably will be safe next week

And no, this is not really a political statement because I don’t really care which side of the aisle you sit on. You were elected to do a job. If the rest of us didn’t do our job because we don’t like our coworkers, we would be unemployed.

I have not seen any news in a few days. Hoping air travel is not more of a mess than usual this weekend. I was due to fly home today but had to extend. Hoping to fly on Saturday but that is up in the air. Fingers crossed that things go smooth.

I was supposed to fly (domestic US) today, but had changed to yesterday a while back for a cheaper fare. There was no line (mid day) at security. We had 20 empty seats, a calm boarding, as if noone wanted to break the spell, departed right on time and landed 30 minutes early.

Let's hope the WFH travelers are flying earlier and the chaos will be less on the weekend.

The House and Senate passed another continuing resolution funding the government temporarily, so there won't be any shutdown for now.

Funding runs out January 19 for some things and Feb 2 for others so we will be facing this same scenario then if they don't pass a budget or CR in the meantime

Kim thank you for that news. It’s one less stressor for me at the immediate moment.

The government shutdown may have been averted for now but the weather may not cooperate.

CW --you lucked out! I flew home yesterday. Both my flight and my brothers were 100% full. Security was not horrible, but OAK is easy. The flight that arrived at our gate as we waited to board that plane was chuck full of families. It definitely looked like a flight that was landing near Disney or something;) I am very thankful I was able to fly home when I did. I would hate to be dealing with it closer to the holiday.

We shall see - I’m not too worried about tomorrow — flying direct CDG to LAX. I don't think tons of people are flying that way.

But we will have fun on Friday when we fly Burbank to Tulsa! But have given ourselves the gift of Burbank rather than LAX, and we are on a flight that stops in Phoenix, but we don't have to change planes. Hopefully it will be okay. I don't imagine a ton of people want to fly the day after Thanksgiving, either.
