The U.S. will not extend the July 1 deadline for airlines to retrofit their planes's altiimeters to negate interference with 5G. The airlines say that supply chain problems are causing delays. If planes are not retrofitted by July 1, they won't be able to fly.
the International Air Transport Association, which represents more than 100 carriers that fly to the United States, said Tuesday that "supply chain issues make it unlikely that all aircraft can be upgraded by the 1 July deadline, threatening operational disruptions during the peak northern summer travel season.
Buttigieg told airlines on a call the department does not plan to extend the deadline and urged them to work aggressively to continue retrofitting airplanes
Airlines: We do not have the parts
Buttigieg: Doesn't matter, work faster
US government runs out of money on/about June 1, so by July 1 the world economy will be such a mess, this problem will be forgotten.
How many years have the airlines known they had until July 1st?
How many years have the airlines known they had until July 1st?
One. But the technology was not immediately available to start working on this. It's expensive and most of the aircraft affected are from regional carriers who don't necessarily have the extra money lying around to do this.
It's really complicated with everyone blaming everyone else--the airlines, the FAA, the FCC, the wireless carriers.
If you focus on the language being used, there’s a lot to read between the lines, To hear the Airlines say “ It’s unlikely that ALL planes will be retrofitted” is meaningless because what they’re not saying is that it is not possible. Even if they’re claiming 57 days beforehand that it’s “unlikely,”
that really is not much of a declarative statement. Imagine a 14-year-old saying it’s not likely they can get their school report done in 57 days. If 99% of the fleet IS retrofitted by July 1, it only means that 1% of the fleet is not travel-ready. The government is not going to ground 99% of the planes that meet the requirements because 1% do not. Transportation Secretary Buttigieg only said there were “no plans to extend the deadline” beyond July 1. That does not mean there absolutely will not be an extension of the deadline. “Plans” can change depending on circumstances. If a deadline extension was announced now, the airlines would simply quit trying to meet it for the next 57 days and move on to deciding how much to raise luggage fees this summer. Announcing a deadline extension just gives them the permission slip they want so they can shine on making a serious effort in the next two months to get the job done.
I agree with Kenko.
And, If I recall correctly... The issue of these altimeters was known, but unaddressed until mere days before the initial 5G rollout date. Two months out is far too early to be alarmist.
Also agree with Kenko. No way the fleet is largely grounded in July.
No one said it would be a large disruption. The vast majority of airliners don't need to be retrofitted. However, even if a handful of planes are not completed in time, it could definitely disrupt flights. More than likely the feeder flights into hubs.
I will worry about it when it happens.... it's kind of like the "Real ID" crisis that shows up annually imho
Opps... we changed our mind you get another X amount of time.
