Portugal Air. It did not go well

My daugher and I were taking a mini vacation to Lagos, Portugal. We booked Portugal Airlines (TAP). Amsterdam to Lisbon to Faro. We arrived at the gate early, the plane was there, the crew was there, the passengers were there, but we still boarded the the plane 40 minutes late. They held the plane for us in Lisbon. So far, so good.

On the way back, we arrived early at the Faro airport to see a notice that the flight was delayed. We got through security, and hung out, as the time kept getting bumped back. Finally after a one hour delay, with no explanation, we took off. We knew that we, along with just about everyone else on the flight, would miss our connection, but they told us they were holding the planes.
We got to Lisbon and to the gate, to find they hadn't started boarding the Amsterdam flight at all. Curious. In theory, it should have left. The gate was packed. Not enough seating. Within a short amount of time, they put the Zone designations up over the 3 cordened off lanes. So we got in ours, Lane C. Where we stood for the next hour and a half! They, again, kept bumping back the time. What they did not tell us was they were waiting for another flight.

They announced that the carryon limits would be strickly enforced. I knew this ahead of time, so I upgraded us to so called Business class, which is just basic with slightly larger seats, as I found out. Zone C or Business class boards last, so imagine my dismay at finding all the bins full! I thought they would protect the bins for those who were in Business and yet to board. Silly me. We noted that several of the bins had oversized bags taking up the entire bin. It looked like sporting equipment. Golf clubs?
I manged to shove my regulation sized bag under the seat in front of me. My personal item was at my feet. They didn't care.
Another note, as least with the flights we were on, the bins for the last two rows are designated "crew only".

Bummer to hear you had a frustrating experience, but it sounds like you made it there not-to-late and got home safely. Of course, mild disappointment and frustration are the best expectations for air travel these days—anything better is a bonus.

There is something odd about you being assigned Group C—per TAP Air Portugal's policy, business class passengers should be in the "Premium" group, which boards before the alphabetic groups. Did you ask why you were incorrectly assigned?

Scudder: No we didn't ask. By the time we got on the plane and realized we had no place for our luggage, it was getting a bit chaotic. TAP did send me a survey and I let them have an earful. By then we were late, tired and just wanted to get in the air and get home.

I am glad that when it is all said and done, you got home ok but you must have been tired and frustrated.

There is a shortage of staff everywhere. There is a shortage of crew. There is a shortage of planes, even.

When I flew from Lisbon last October to Austin, the passport control staff had decided to walk out on strike. And the lines waiting to go through passport control were out the door.

You book a flight and hope for the best. You go to take a flight and you hope for the best.

Of course, now, we have to factor in weather as well as the Xmas holidays.

What an experience - delay after delay, and paying extra for inferior service. Having the bins full of oversized equipment is stunning. Was there some ski team or golfing excursion group heading for Lagos?

I’m guessing the TAP won’t be the first airline you seek out for future flights. Was the airfare for this trip super low priced?

My word, what a mess. And to have to stand in line for 1.5 hours at the gate is pretty awful. Interesting about the "crew only" bins. I realized on one of my recent trips where I flew Delta One that it was better not to be in Row 9 because those bins are where the crew stashes it's stuff. I was easily able to get my carry on into another bin, in fact a male passenger saw me looking, picked up my bag and stowed it for me before I could say..."I've got this", lol. He was very kind.

Yep, I hope the price was inexpensive enough that the hassle was worth it! I'll bet the sunshine was awesome!

One of the reasons we book Premium Economy is to get on the plane early and get overhead space(for our correctly sized bag). There's no excuse for treating a Business Class passenger the way you were treated. Sounds like some sports team had priority over those who paid for Business Class-sports teams would never receive special treatment in the US, would they? Of course, only the WNBA teams fly commercial.

Brussels Airlines is part of Lufthansa, and so is Eurowings. And at one time there were even talks that LH would merge these two.
So yes, that you booked Brussels Airlines, but ended up on Eurowings is not such a big surprise. All domestic flights in Europe are going the LCC model anyway...
