We are traveling from Portmouth to Birmingham and do not wish to travel via London where we would have to change stations to continue our trip on to Birmingham. Does anyone have a suggestion as to other routes we might use as an alternative? Thanks

Have a look at this site and its journey planner. It looks like you can travel without going via London but it does mean at least one change of train.

My wife and I have done this trip by train and had to change trains in Reading, missed London. Easy but long day.
