port to airport barcelona

Hi, We are going on a cruise in October. We are coming back on a Sunday in Barcelona according to the cruise schedule at 6AM. Can we make it to the airport on time for a 1045AM flight with a couple hours in advance? How is the port there and the airport flying back to the US? Anybody got suggestion as to where to stay for 3 nights before the cruise in Barcelona?
Thanks.

No worries!! We had a similar situation last year. Our ship docked at 7am, we walked off carrying our own luggage, took the bus to the bottom of the Las Ramblas, took the subway to Catalunya square where we caught the airport shuttle bus and still got to the airport before 9am. We had more than enough time to spare. If all the connections I described worries you, then there are plenty of taxis available to take you to the airport.

I just stayed at the Hotel Granvia and loved it. It was just renovated (within the last 2 months) and it is well located. I second the recommendation for the bus to the airport (Aerobus), which you can pick up at Plaza Catalunya.

Check with your cruise line. They will have a recommended "earliest flight you should plan on departure day" time. Of course, you could cut it closer, but the cruise lines do this every day, so I'd follow their recommendation.

A place to stay for three nights in October. I really liked Hostal Campi. It's well located in the Gothic Quarter, just a few blocks from Placa Catalunya (which is easily reached by the Express bus from the Airport). From there everything is walking distance or a relatively easy hop on the metro. Some caveats, only half the rooms come with en suite bathrooms. If that's important to you, book carefully. Our room wasn't air conditioned either, which wasn't a big deal for us in April and shouldn't be a big deal in October - but could be a problem in July or August. I don't know exactly where the cruises depart from Barcelona, but it shouldn't be too hard using the metro, if you pack light. If you can't pack light, I'd probably pay extra for a taxi rather than take multiple bags through the metro - too many thieves to be juggling a lot of items.

Elaine/Rick: Since you really should be at the airport 3 hours before your flight, which would make it 7:45 (and I wouldn't be comfortable with any time later than being at the airport by 8:15) you will be obliged to move very fast and be very lucky, because though the ship docks at 6:00 you'll not likely disembark before 7:00 or 7:30 even if you carry your own baggage off.

With carry-on only, which very few cruisers choose to do, you can walk right off the ship when they dock. If you have to wait for checked luggage, it changes everything. If you want packlist ideas for cruising with carry-on only, send me a PM.

If you can carry your luggage off the ship you will have no problem. Twice I have done that in Barcelona, both times we took a taxi from the port to the airport, it is not overly expensive but obviously more than public transport but WAY more convenient.

Thank you so much for all your advices. We ended up taking a flight for the next day since it was a lot cheaper and why not spend one more night while we are there, who knows we might never have the opportunity to go back! We still havent decided on the hotel yet...so many..

Last year we stayed at the Hotel Denit just of Catalunya Plaza. The surroundings are not great, though we did not have any problems, and the hotel itself is fine, with a good breakfast. It is ideally located for walking just about anywhere and the metro is right at the square.
