Port of Southampton to Central London?

We are disembarking a cruise ship in Southampton and going to a hotel near Oxford Circus tube station.
What is the most convenient way to go. How much? Where and when to purchase tickets?

Get a taxi (or the cruise company may provide a bus, I suppose), to Southampton Central station, which is about a mile away, depending on which dock gate your ship comes in to. There are 2 fast trains an hour to London Waterloo, just tell your driver you want the London side of the station, so you don't have to cross the footbridge with your suitcases. It's about 1 hour 20 minutes to Waterloo, but avoid weekday trains leaving Southampton much before 09.00 because they will be packed with London commuters (including me, one or two days a week). Buy tickets from the South West Trains website: http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/ Tickets go on sale 13 weeks ahead of the travel date.

If you travel a bit later in the morning then the South West Trains website will offer you the option of Super Off-Peak single tickets. They are only valid for specific trains and if you miss that train, you pay the full standard fare, plus a penalty. During the week an Anytime Day single is only a few pounds more, so get one of those. EDIT: I meant Advance tickets, not Super Off-Peak. Ticket validity is shown here: http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/comparetickets.aspx#99417 Your best option for travelling within London depends on your plans for the rest of your visit. You can buy a ticket from Southampton Central to any London Underground Zone 1 station, and that will cost you about £41.00 for a single ticket that is valid at any time of day. Or, for £38.00 you could get a ticket to Waterloo, then get a daily travel card, a weekly travel card, or an Oyster card which you top up with cash, which may be a better idea if you will be in London for some time. Don't buy a single Underground ticket from Waterloo to Oxford Circus, because the prices amount to daylight robbery. See the Transport for London website for details: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/default.aspx Oxford Circus is 4 stops from Waterloo on the Bakerloo line. When you get off the Southampton train, you go through the ticket barriers at the end of the platform, turn left and walk along the concourse and you will see the entrance to the Underground on your left, past the other platforms. Go down the escalator to find the ticket kiosks and station entrance. Any northbound Bakerloo train will get you to Oxford Circus in a few minutes.
