My husband and I will be taking a cruise in the Med next summer. While we are at the port of Naples we would love to visit the Royal Palace in Caserta. My Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Port book does not mention Caserta (at least I can't find it in there) Could someone please give me specific instructions on how to get there and back? We have never been to Europe and our ship does not offer excursions to Caserta. Thanks!
Take the train. In the morning one every hour and two an hour mid day on. About 45 mins, some are a little quicker. Mostly regional trains which means no reservations and cheap. From the port take a taxi, bus or tram 1 to the train station, buy the ticket, validate in the little yellow box, and get on the next train to Ceserta. Learn to use trenitilia.com to get the schedules and use the Italian spelling - Napoli.
Thanks - it is nice to know the train departs every hour. I can't wait to see the palace. I really appreciate the info :)
Ruth, I don't want to be a joy killer at all, but try to downplay your expectations a bit since the palace (which is awesome and jaw-dropping) has been plagued by mismanagement, some embezzlement scandals and is reported to be not in a prime or good visitation condition at the moment.
