I do not want to see EVERYTHING in Pompeii.. I just want to have a short visit of 2 hours and see a little of it. BUT: with spinal arthritis (cannot stand more than 10 min. without sitting down) and bad knee-- can I even do that? would it be workable? I would sooo appreciate any advice on this.... Thanks!
My suggestion would be to sign up with one of the private guides at the entrance to Pompeii. S/he can take you through the highlights at your own pace. That way you also avoid doing extra miles for not finding your way around. Their price is quite reasonable at under 50 Euro for 2 hours.
Sher, I have severe arthritis in my hips and fibromyalgia so standing or walking for long is very difficult for me as well. I did fine at Pompeii. It would be a shame for you to miss it, imo. Just go and do what you can at your own pace. I found lots of places to sit.
I have severe arthritis, a bad knee, and bad ankle and I did Pompeii last year. The key is to do at your own pace and you may not be able to see the entire area but most. Also be aware that Pompeii is all cobblestone and very uneven walking which can be difficult. I brought a collapsible walking cane which was invaluable. All considered…don’t miss Pompeii
I'd suggest either getting a tour guide, as someone mentioned earlier, or at the very least making sure to carve out enough extra time in your schedule to move through the site at your own pace. It's amazing and not to be missed, but due to uneven cobblestones, etc. etc., it can be pretty hard on your knees and ankles. If you're not in a rush, you can move slowly and sit as regularly as you like -- that way, you can still enjoy your visit. It really is a magnificent place to visit.
