I’m pretty new to Polaris travel. The only time we’ve traveled this way was on a plane with a 2 middle seat configuration. For our upcoming trip all the planes are 767-400s, which have all single seats, including the center seats. If you’ve traveled with a companion on a flight like this, how do you usually arrange your seat choices? Are we basically resigned to not communicating much with one another the entire flight?
Thanks!
You ask that as if it's a bad thing. Lol. Just kidding. The seats are built for privacy, so easy chatting would be difficult. The closest you will get will be selecting seats directly across an aisle from each other- with one of you in a window seat. That's what DH and I do. Even then, you would both need to lean forward to see past the wall that encloses the seat.
I wonder if it is possible to lower a section of the partition between the paired seats. BA a usiness class seats with the “yin Yang” configuration like this have that option. I cannot tell from the photos on this websites, but someone else may know. Or try asking on FlyerTalk.

It has been about two years since we were in Polaris class. As I remember the two middle pair seats had a removable privacy screen that would link the two seats.
Lola and Frank, the larger United planes have two seats together in Polaris class. The 767 has a one-one-one configuration.
This is what Aerolopa shows for the 2 possible configurations of Polaris Class on the 767-400:
This one is 2-2-2:

And this one is 2-1-2:

Aerolopa is usually pretty accurate. Are you sure you are on a 767? Did the seating chart for your flight show something different?
I have never seen 1-1-1 on any plane for business class. Many have 1-2-1, like the BA suites we fly (also Japan Airlines)
The Points Guy has a review of the United 1-1-1 Polaris configuration on the 767-400. His only comment about couples is:
"There are no perfect seats for couples in this configuration. If you both want to maximize your sleep, I'd recommend selecting window-adjacent seats on the sides of the plane and then catching up with each other once you've landed."
https://thepointsguy.com/news/united-polaris-business-class-boeing-767-400/
Well, that is a first for me.
With that configuration, I would put us both in window seats, one behind the other. We flew that was in a 1-2-1 plane, and all I had to do to talk was stand up and lean over the back of his seat. Or we would meet in the aisle.
United's Polaris seats on their 767s are a 1-1-1 configuration. It is on the 777 with 1-2-1 seating that couples would benefit picking the odd numbered rows' D & G seats or odd numbered rows' D& F seats on the 787.
On the United MileagePlus board on flyertalk , there are posts “Everything you want to know about where to sit” for each plane configuration. Here is the one for the 767-400:
I travel solo, but if I were traveling with a companion I’d choose two seats next to the window on the same side. The seats that are straight (typically the odd rows) give you more privacy than the ones at an angle.
This is what United's 1-2-1 configuration looks like on the Configuration 787-8 Dreamliner. For each row of window seats there are 2 center seats.
https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/company/aircraft/boeing-787-8-dreamliner.html
The other configurations have 1 center seat for each row of window seats.
If we are flying on that seat configuration, my wife and I try to get two window seats. One in front of the other.
Sigh.
For those of you insisting the configuration is 1-2-1, I’m on the United website where it lets you see which seats are still available. There are multiple flights on 767-400 planes and the configuration is 1-1-1.
Thanks to those who suggested window seats one behind the other. Sounds like a decent strategy.
Joe, you might want to take a closer look at those links. All 767's show 1-1-1 in Biz.
Besides, they all have the same fuselage width, and are using the same seats. They are numbered and lettered the same across all 3. As I'm sure someone has posted upthread, Aerolopa gives a much more realistic view...
https://www.aerolopa.com/ua-76u
Row 1 has 3 seats, as do all the rows following.
Joe, this is the plane.

I’m not going to continue to engage in an argument about seat configuration. I’ve looked at multiple seating charts on multiple United flights on this route this past week and the configuration is 1-1-1.
Also my initial question wasn’t about whether or not the configuration is 1-1-1.
Again, thanks to those of you who offered suggestions. We will select window seats one behind the other.
@Lola: re: 76S vs. 76U configurations: All the 767-400s have been converted to 76Us. IDK why Aerolopa still lists the 76Ss.
`OK, I get it now. What I see as 3 pairs of seats in one row (AB, DF, KL), they designate as 2 separate rows with 3 single seats in each—-A, F, and L in Row 1, then B, D, and K in Row 2.
But AB, DF, and KL are still connected pairs, however they are designated. So even if there is no section in the partition that can be lowered, they are still closer together than successive row window seats in the 1-2-1 arrangement in BA Club World planes with the new suite configuration.

I actually preferred the yin-yang seating in Club World in the 747, but those planes have been retired by BA.. We were booked for our last flight in the 747 in March 2020, but of course that flight was canceled.
Lest anyone else reading be confused (I think the OP is clear at this point) the Points Guy has a photo in his article which shows the center section of Polaris seats on United's 1-1-1 configuration.
https://thepointsguy.com/news/united-polaris-business-class-boeing-767-400/
I can clearly see that those center seats in the photo are aligned quite differently than what I have seen on board their 1-2-1 configuration. It's more than a numbering designation. The configurations are quite different; and United numbers the two configurations differently to distinguish the alignment.
As to whether the center seats are closer for a couple than 2 windows, well I travel as a single.
The Points Guy also has a review of the 1-2-1 configuration on United. I can see photos that show how much closer the center 2 seats are to each other, but they're not as apparent as in his photos of the 1-1-1 configuration.
https://thepointsguy.com/airline/reviews/united-polaris-787-9/
I've never been on the BA version to compare their configurations to United's.
All the 767's are 1-1-1. I understand that the diagrams on Aerolopa may be a bit hard to
interpret with the alternating slant of the seats.
First off, understand that aircraft swaps are not out of the question, so any work you
put into understanding and deciding on seats is always a bit at risk.
Second, if sitting next to each other is more important than lie-flat seats, then book in
premium economy. All PE configs on United are in pairs next to each other on the
sides (some PE is 3 seats in the middle). Especially at the bulkhead, these are nice
seats and you'll save a decent chunk of change.
I flew on one of those Polaris 1-1-1 planes last year. The only way to really understand the seats is by video- the points guy or others. The center and window aisles are off set so we chose two window seats as the “closer” option for a couple. . I was behind my husband and could stand up to look over his seat to chat briefly, say good night, etc.
