Please make sense out of this

Hi. I was looking at flight costs on Expedia to go from Salt Lake City, Utah to Venice, Italy next May. The cheapest one-way flight I can get is $1720 and has two stops. Yet, I can get a roundtrip with the same number of stops for $1183. Is this an error? Do they not have the majority of the flights listed yet? What would be a reasonable price for a one-way ticket and if I want to go around May 26th, when would it be ideal to order by so I can get the best deal?

Thanks!

Quite often, one way long distance tickets are more expensive than round trip.

I would suggest for next May it is way too early to buy tickets. You might want to start watching fares and when they come down to a reasonable rate, then buy them. What is reasonable? That's for you to decide.

Sales happen all the time. I'd wait until later on this year, or even early next year to buy the ticket.

And why are you buying one way...are you moving to Venice? Or do you have to return? Putting your return flight in at the same time may save you money--even if you're not returning from Venice. It's called an open-jaw ticket and you can check prices buy using the "multi-city" page to make your reservations.

You might also check directly with specific airlines at their own websites.

Alrighty, I'll check back in a couple months. Thanks. :)

Why one-way? I assumed that to do open-jaw, you would just by multiple one-way tickets, didn't know you could save by doing the multi-city offer, I'll check that out. In this trip, I will need three flights - SLC to Venice, Rome to Athens, and Istanbul to SLC.

Alex - I think you would be better off doing an open jaw SLC-VEN / IST-SLC, and doing your Rome to Athens flight on one of the budget carriers in Europe.

Hi Alex - I've used a Consolidator for many years - AirfarePlanet.Com and you can check for yourself or give George - the owner, a call - Right now, a one way ticket on various airlines from Salt Lake to Venice is running about $391.00 for next May.
Have a Great trip

Thanks for the advice. :)

I knew $391 was too good to be true and I looked at it and there's $250 on top of that for tax and fees making it pretty similar to half of a roundtrip/multicity ticket through other lines. But I'll look at both sites again come this winter.

And yeah, I'll book Rome to Athens separately. I saw that you could get a flight from one of the local lines for 96 EUR which sounds good and then a multicity SLC to Venice and Istanbul to SLC costs $1277 (at the current time) all fees included. I tried the multicity deal on airfareplanet but it seemed to require you to take four flights or it wouldn't process. :/

Thanks again.
