We have 3 minutes between train from Zurich arriving at Buchloe on platform 3 and another departing to Fussen from platform 4. Our friend from Colorado suggests that this is doable. Any comments?
I have done these kinds of changes--the real question, is how many bags do you have, and what condition are you in? It's stairs down and stairs up!
My wife and I are carrying two wheeled carry-on suitcases total. If we can keep bags in train car compartment with us, we can get out fast. But are the train schedules precise to minute?
I already sent you a link to the station layout at Buchloe. Platform (Gleis) 3 and platform 4 are on opposite sides of the train tracks. You will have to go down stairs to the tunnel and come back up again.
It's too bad you are using roller bags, because stairs are difficult with them. Hopefully they are not too heavy to carry. Do you have reservations and already know that you are in a compartment? Most trains these days are going to open car "aircraft seating". My bag is never too big to put in the over-head rack, but I ofter find that there are enough empty seats to put it beside me.
The main reason for the regional train's stop in Buchloe is to accept passengers from your express train from Lindau, so if your train is a few minutes late, it should wait. The main thing is to know when you are approaching the Buchloe station and be at the end of the car, with your bags, ready to get off when the train stops. Just stay with the flow. The conductor on the regional train is not going to release it while people are getting on.
And, as I told you, there is another train in an hour.
Most German train stations have a similar configuration. Tracks 1 and 2 are together, with track 1 using the platform next to the station. Track 2 shares a platform with track 3, 4 with 5, 6 with 7, etc. Even "stub" stations, like Munich, Stuttgart, or Frankfurt, have tracks 1 and 2 together, with track 2 sharing a platform with track 3, 4 with 5, etc. There are some exceptions.
Yes there are elevators in this station, and yes, they go both up and down, but given that they only have 3 minutes, unless they have a huge amount of luggage, I think using the stairs is much better than waiting for the elevator.
Thanks, you all. I think we can do it within 3 minutes.
Don't sweat it. There is a direct train from Buchloe to Füssen every hour until 8:44 PM. The next two hours after that there are train that require a change in Kaufbeuren but don't take much longer. If you miss the 3 min connection, there's another train in an hour.
I’ll second the suggestion to skip the elevator…no need to waste time waiting on the elevator when you can use the stairs and probably be in your seat in about the same amount of time. This is a very small station, so three minutes should give you plenty of time. I changed trains there going from Munich to Füssen (also a three-minute change), but it was a simple change on the same platform…took maybe fifteen seconds to get off of one train and on another.
