Help-
we are arriving Sat Oct 20th at CDG and immediately catching the TGV to Aix (with a rail pass and reservations). I am not sure what this rail strike will mean for us. The headlines said it is to last a couple of days, here in the US you are never sure when strikes will end-how is it known that it will only last a couple of days? Also what happens to your rail pass when you are not able to use it?
Dianna, if this strike is being handled similarly to the ones in Germany they will be at non-peak travel times for just a few hours. It will disrupt some service, but the train company will just cancel the routes during the strike. The nice thing about trains vs. planes is that you can jam a lot more people on to trains. You may want to not be dependent on a train that day. If you can finagle your schedule around that day then you won't even notice that it happened.
as far as i've heard it's to be a one day general strike of all transportation...metro, bus and trains...usually an announced strike doesn't last more than what it signs up for
I was in Italy in March and was taking the train from Genoa to Nice. There was a train strike called the day I was travelling and the train only went as far as the border. I then had to get a cab onto Nice. The strike was called for 24 hours and that is exactly how long it lasted. They seem to be fairly orderly about them. Good luck.
