Looking at flights now, surprised to see so many United (are they any good going to Europe?) and should I really wait until Jan 2012 to book flight? sfo to amsterdam then vienna to sfo. When can I look for local flights or tains? amsterdam to paris and paris to Trier? Thanks for as

You're seeing a lot of United flights because effective Jan 2012, Continental and United are merging their fleets and schedules into one big airline. You've got plenty of time to watch the airfares until you are ready to commit. You typically can't book high-speed trains until 90 days before departure. For Amsterdam to Paris take the high-speed Thalys train: http://www.thalys.com The earlier you book the cheaper it will be.

The cheapest advance purchase Smoove fare on Thalys trains for Amsterdam-Paris is €35. If you book the right route (Paris-Saarbruecken-Trier) up to 92 days in advance on the German Rail site, you can get a Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare as low as €29.
