Pisa to San Gimignano

I am having trouble finding how to get from Pisa to San Gimignano. I think it is a train/bus combo but I cannot find helpful websites.

You need to reach Poggibonsi first, the main town near SG. You can get to Poggibonsi via bus or train (change in Empoli). Once in Poggibonsi, you get a bus to SG. Bus service from Pisa airport to Poggibonsi is very limited in frequency and you may have to pass through Florence first. This is one option: http://www.sienamobilita.it/sienapisa.html Unless you are lucky enough to arrive at the right time, I think the train has more choices. Pisa > Empoli (change to train for Siena) > Poggibonsi
At Poggibonsi station take bus to SG, just a few minutes away. I'd like to add that SG is a small village in the middle of the countryside with very limited public transportation options (buses aren't very frequent). If you are staying in the area, I recommend to rent a car at Pisa airport and drive there. Keep the car while you are staying in the Tuscan countryside and return it only when you move on to a bigger city (if you go to a bigger city later). The rule of thumb is: rent a car to visit small towns and countryside, ditch a car while visiting the cities (like Florence). San Gimignano is definitely car material.

Thanks...I presume we can buy tickets at the Pisa airport? I know a car would be helpful, but for various reasons, no one in the group wants to drive. We are just there for 2 days and then move to Florence. We want to experience the town at night after many tourists leave.

There is a train station inside the airport. The station is called "Pisa Aeroporto". You can buy tickets there and the train comes inside the airport. The fastest options will require 2 train changes. PISA AEROPORTO > PISA CENTRALE (change train to FIRENZE SMN,) PISA CENTRALE > EMPOLI (change train to SIENA) EMPOLI > POGGIBONSI-SAN GIMIGNANO There are also trains that go all the way from the airport to Florence (FIRENZE SMN), however those stop only at Pisa Centrale, but not at Empoli. If you take those you'll have to go all the way to Florence (past Empoli) and then back track from Florence to Siena (and get off at Poggibonsi). If you take the Siena train from Florence, obviously you don't have to change at Empoli. Check the Trenitalia options in the website below: www.trenitalia.com enter from: PISA AEROPORTO
To: Poggibonsi-San Gimignano
