We fly in to Pisa at 1530, with our 4 yr old. We r thinking we'd like to stay in Lucca and take the train around the area, then head to florence. Looking for train/transportation suggestions or other options for our itinerary. Thanks!
There's train service between Pisa airport and Lucca, with an easy change required at Pisa Centrale. Trains run twice hourly and, depending on the combination of trains, takes either 45 minutes or 1 hour and costs either 2.40 euro or 3.50 euro. Lucca has good train and bus service to the surrounding area. For transfer to Florence, you can take train (about hourly) or bus (possibly more frequent). Train takes just over an hour. Bus is scheduled for about the same amount of time, but can be faster when traffic is light (my bus trip in November took only 40 minutes). If flying home from Pisa, you can take the train from Florence to Pisa Centrale and then on to the airport. BTW, no reservations on most of these trains as they're regional trains, which also means they're inexpensive.
Pisa airport is one of only 4 airports with a Trenitalia train station. In 5 minutes you are at Pisa Centrale. Easy transfer to the train to Lucca. Journey time is 45 minutes with one train change at Pisa Centrale. All trains to Lucca are Regionales - no seat reservations permitted. It's like the Muni in S.F. Just buy your ticket and get on. If no seats, you can stand. Just remember to validate your ticket in the little yellow box in the train station. Also, children under 12 ride for 1/2 price in Italy.
