We are picking up our rental car at the Pisa Airport, should we drive the car to see the Leaning Tower or take the train/bus and then pick up the car? After we see the tower we are leaving the city and travailing in Tuscany. We are coming into Pisa by train from Chique Terre.
My friend and I did this exact thing 2 years ago. We left our bags at the station, took the bus to the tower, walked back (per rick's walk in his book, but in reverse), picked up our luggage, took a cab to the car rental building at the airport, and went from there. It was very easy. Pisa is controlled by a ZTL area and I did not want to risk driving into it. yes it costs a bit more when your rental originates from the airport but it was worth it to us and I am happy we did it this way rather than driving into Pisa.
I would also take the bus, I lived in Pisa and I still got lost there! It's not as easy to find the Tower as you might think...
Supposedly, there is a parking area near the tower. However, you may have to pass through ZTL areas to reach it. As with Debra, we used the staffed luggage storage area at the Pisa train station. Quite secure and you need your passport to get your luggage back. All luggage is stored behind a counter. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the tower or you can take the bus from a stop across the street from the train station.
I drove through Pisa and parked around the corner from the Tower and still don't know how I escaped without a ZTL ticket. When I've looked at the ZTL map for Pisa they're all over the city. I would not drive into Pisa again.
Thank you all for your help, we will definitely pick up the car after seeing the Tower.
