We are renting a car to drive from Rome to Tuscany. I read that it's best to pick it up at an airport, but which one?? Which Rome airport is closer to the road to Tuscany? Or which airport is easiest/cheapest to get to from Rome (our hotel is in Piazza Navona)?? Thanks for your help!
We picked up our car at Ciampino (sp) and it was really easy to get on the highway to Tuscany. Taxi to get to this airport was around 30 euros. We drove to our agriturismo near Montalcino and the drive took longer than we expected-but a very easy drive.
Thanks, Susan. Since I posted this question, I read that it might be even better to pick up the car at Via Ludovisi (on the north side of Rome). Supposedly, it's very easy to get on the highway from there too, and it would save us the taxi fare to the airport. Have you heard anything about that location? We are planning to use AutoEurope...thoughts?
Ellen, unfortunately because of travel companions I had to pick up the car at Termini and then drove out of downtown. If I had not had my TomTom with me, I think I would still be driving helplessly around Rome and that was almost 2yrs ago. My only advise is to take a GPS with you - we purchased the Europe map on-line and it was a great asset and timesaver. We also stayed at a place outside of Florence - in Panzano and the GPS took us everywhere we wanted to go without fail. Really glad we had it and would take it again if needed. Hope this helps.
