We will be flying into Rome and train to Florence for 3 nights then planned to pick up a car and drive Pienza for 4 nights. Wondering if
it is advisable to pick up a car in Florence to drive there or better to train to Siena and then pick up the car there.? We want to see Siena maybe stay over night there and the head to Pienza for 3 nights instead of 4. We then plan to then drop car off in Chiusi to train back to Rome.
Does this sound ok. I've heard that getting a car in Florence is difficult but mainly dropping it off is just wondering if picking it up is just as cub a hassle. Thanks!
doffa,
I assume you're aware of the usual "caveats" on driving in Italy, such as the need for each driver on the rental form to have the compulsory International Driver's Permit. You'll also have to be extremely vigilant to avoid the ZTL (limited traffic) areas which exist not only in Florence, but also in many other towns.
Yes we have driven twice before in Italy. Actually 2nd trip drove from Rome to Radda, then down to Pienza then to Positano. This trip trying to keep the driving at a minimum, as you can see the last trip was way too much!
We have picked up and dropped off rental cars on Borgo Ognisanti with Randy access to the Autostrada. I recommend picking the car up in Florence.
It'd be simpler to just go ahead to Pienza and check into your accommodations. You can come back to Siena for a day trip. It may just be 1/2 hr. from Pienza.
