Just received a speeding ticket from Oria, Italy on January 21, 2019. My wife and I were in France for 3 weeks and rented a car from SIXT in Rouen, France. On the date the ticket was issued, we were in Rouen. At no time did we ever enter Italy. The violation claims 91k in a 90k zone and demands 64euros. Sixt had to have given the Italian police my info. We were in France Sept.-Oct. 2018. NEVER IN ITALY.
Does the ticket have the license number of the car you were driving?
I would contact Sixt for an explanation and to have them make the necessary correction
Thanks, I have contacted Sixt.
If they insist it was you, do you have hotel receipts / charge card statements showing you were in France at the time of the ticket ?
WOW, how frustrating. When you get this sorted will you repost and let us know how it got resolved?
Wow, Rouen, Fr, is a long way (2000km, 20 hrs per Google Maps) from Oria, IT. That's like being in Chicago and getting a ticket from California. I think Sixt made a mistake on the license #.
But, just one more reason not to rent a car in Europe!
Yes, I have hotel receipts from our entire time in France. I will post an update if I hear back from Sixt.
I wouldn't stick with the "if" I hear back from Sixt.
Clearly they have given your details incorrectly and probably charged you a fair amount for the privilege. You should ensure that you get a live rep with authority who can:-
apologise
refund your information charge
offer you compensation for the inconvenience and worry
contact the fining authority and clarify that they provided an
incorrect personprovide you with a statement from the fining authority that there are
no fines outstanding against youall in a reasonable time
and do all this without difficulty once you have sent them the documentation which proves your case.
Good luck
Okay, an update on phantom tickets. I have received a second phantom ticket from Oria, Italy dated July 2017. I was in the USA for the entire month of July 2017. I have never been to Oria, Italy ! Regarding the first ticket, Sixt dropped the handling fee they charge for providing the mis-information to the Italian police after I contested the charge with my bank and provided them with a copy of my VISA bill proving I was in Rouen the day the Italian ticket was issued. I have emailed the Italian police in Oria- translated into Italian- with a photo copy of the ticket and my VISA bill, but I have not heard a word from them. SIXT tells me to wait, but they can do nothing to help me in dealing with Italian authorities. I think this may be identity theft or a scam of some sort.
I also received a ticket in the mail today from France, and this one I earned and paid- along with a late fee. It would have been 45 Euros if I had paid it within 46 days. However, I had to pay68 Euros, as it was long past the46 days- I received it today! What a rip off.
I have rented from SIXT in the past and been satisfied with their service, but I will never rent from them again, as I think they have really screwed up with the Italian tickets and they have not been helpful in resolving this.
Sorry joe,
Did the ticket you received from Oria say that you can contest it via email?
I thought that foreigners could file a free appeal to the Prefect only via registered letters written in Italian.
There were two email addresses on the tickets. I sent copies to both of them. On e went through, but the other was returned as the "mail box was full."
My newspaper has a columnist (probably syndicated) that helps people resolve travel issues. This sounds like something the columnist could help resolve.
