Personal Item for Alitalia?

In addition to a carry on that has to be 5kg or less (gulp!), AlItalia allows you to take a personal item such as a briefcase or laptop. Has anyone tried to take a backpack for their carry on and a smaller daybag for the personal item? Are the size/weight restrictions the same for both or would they limit the weight of the personal item even more?

My husband and I flew Alitalia to Italy in June. We each packed in a backpack (the RS convertible) and a day bag, all of which we carried on. Our backpacks each weighed 11 pounds (5 kg). His day bag weighed about 9 pounds and mine about 7. We went through check-in three times (O’Hare, Milan, and Rome), and no one ever asked to weigh any one of our carry-ons. But that doesn’t mean they never will.

If you saw what the Italian business men take on these flights you wouldn't ask the question! They practically take suitcases. Incredible. As the above reply says you never know though. I take a laptop in it's own case (looks like a very large purse) and my little wheelie cabin case and a purse and have never had any problems. Coming out of Venice on my last trip I not only had those things but also a mask on a stick well wrapped that looked like a small tree and no one battered an eye. As long as you don't have massive bags you should be OK. I also have never had my bags weighed except when I left Melbourne on 2 occassions last year. No one else seems to care.
