I'm looking at flights for our trip to England/Scotland in June 2020. One of our options from Edinburgh to Los Angeles involves a change of planes in Amsterdam. If Brexit is a done deal by that time, will we have to go through passport control in Amsterdam as well as in Los Angeles since the UK will no longer be part of the EU or is that controlled by something else? Or will it not affect us at all since our ultimate destination is the US?
If Brexit is a done deal by that time,
No one knows exactly how things are going to be by June 2020.
The UK is not part of the Schengen zone.

Brexit issue is hard boarder between Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (UK).
I realize no one knows what the case will be by June 2020 (I have good friends in England and have been following Brexit closely for a long time), and I had forgotten about the UK not being part of the Schengen area, so if I were going to transfer in Amsterdam right now, would I have to go through passport control, or am I not really entering the Schengen area since we're not leaving the airport?
Transfer time: https://www.schiphol.nl/en/transfers/
Since your final destination UK is outside the Schengen zone you should be able to both stay in the secured zone and not go through passport/immigration control at AMS.
If you are on a through ticket, you would stay airside in Amsterdam and use the transfer not the exit channels, so you would only clear passport control in the UK. Brexit will have no impact on this process.
This will not be any different than if you flew today from the US to Turkey through Amsterdam. Air-side transfer since Turkey is not Schengen either.
Thanks everyone. My only experience with a transfer in Amsterdam was from the US to Italy. We made the tight time even with needing to go through passport control, but knowing we can skip that step this time makes me feel more comfortable with that possible flight and transfer.
