Parking Private Car at the Last Supper Location

In Rick's books of Italy, under "Getting There", he says to see the Last Supper, to take the metro or tram#16, but doesn't mention private cars. We will have a rental van, full of all our travel gear. Is there a safe place to park legally near the Last Supper Location (Church of Santa Maria della Grazie).

This may be the first time we've had this question here, and you may have guessed that there's a reason why Rick doesn't cover how to get there by car. I doubt that anyone here has driven a car, let alone a van, in downtown Milan. * * * ¶ Hopefully, you've previously driven a large vehicle into the center of a big Italian city, in which case you'll already know that you'll want to be cautious about getting the van into the typical Italian urban parking structure (often underground) that are designed for small cars - turning radiuses and narrow confined areas that blindside those not expectingthis. * * * ¶ If all else fails, you may want to research whether it's possible to park a vehicle that size in a train or metro station - same warning about confined spaces given above. Cadorna train station is just one you could check out, as it's in the general area. * * * Now about your "rental van full of our travel gear" question: Most people here have been lucky, when they've had to leave their things in the car. But there are no guarantees. ¶ What some travelers do, who want to see the Last Supper, is (just a thought) they make Milan either their first or last stop, and they do one overnight in Milan and try for a time slot such that they can leave their baggage in the hotel.

There is an underground parking roughly at 300m walking from the Cenacolo. Fares are like € 2,60 for the first 2 hours then € 1,50 for following hours.

Yes, on Google Earth I saw that parking structure (referred to in 2nd post). But the question Robert really needs answered is whether he can get a large car the size of a van into, and out of, that structure. Unless someone here claims they have personal experience parking in a car park structure in that part of Milan, then Robert is going to be left wondering whether he can get the van into and out of the structure. I've been in urban parking structures in Italy where I could barely get a SMALL vehicle into and out of it, let alone something as wide as a van. The problem can arise in 3 places in the more confined car park structures there: the parking stall itself, the turns to to to different levels, and especially the turns and lanes at the exit. The situation is often aggravated by having impatient locals' cars behind you, wondering what the problem is - while you're wondering if you're going to scrape the van on a wall or other car, while you're thinking about whether you should have paid extra for the zero CDW deductible.

We faced this same dilemma in 1985 when we were traveling in a camper throughout Italy. Our solution? We parked outside the city and took the subway in to view the Last Supper. Worked great for us. :)

Linda just offered a good suggestion to address Kent's #1 concern, tight spaces in a parking garage. But there is still the issue of the van "full of travel gear", possibly in open view.

Hey All, Thanks for all your ideas and opinions. We fly into the airport that morning and pick up the van. The first day of 3 weeks in Italy, so I don't want to start out losing all our gear. That would be a disaster, if it happened on the first day. The link below shows a picture of the van. http://www.carpages.co.uk/fiat/fiat-fleet-world-honours-24-05-05.asp I rather like parking outside the city and all four of us taking the metro. The more immediate problem is that the website shows no openings for that day/time. Other sources say essentially, "Ignore the website, call this phone number for up-to-date status. Cancellations don't show up on the website. Must wait till Monday to call. Thanks again for your helpful responses. Gratefully, The OP

Robert: Have you previously driven in Italian cities like Milan?
