We're driving from Madrid and want to take ferry to Tangier. Most rental agencies won't let us take car on the ferry. Is there parking in Tarifa that would accommodate us overnight?
If you're in Madrid and want to go to Morocco, fly. It'll be cheaper than what you propose above, a much better use of your time, and best of all you get to bypass the grotesque "bordertown" experience of Tangiers and go directly to the real Morocco. You can get dirt cheap flights from Madrid to Marrakech and other destinations every day. You will have a much, much better experience.
Thanks David. We're driving because upon return from Tangier and Fes, we are swinging up the east coast of Spain to Valencia and then inland.
OK. Just keep the following in mind - it's quick, cheap, and really easy to fly between Madrid (and other Spanish cities) and Marrakech (and other Moroccan cities). Tangiers = Tijuana - get past it to the real Morocco as quickly as you can. Fes will be great. Not sure I would invest any of my vacation days in Valencia (it's not awful, not just anything particularly attractive). If you want to end up in NE Spain, rather than wasting days and dollars going through Tangiers and the Costa del Tourismo, you could easily fly from Madrid to Marrakech, take the train to Fes, then fly back from Fes (maybe Barcelona) - that would be cheaper, faster, and better. Flights are crazy cheap. In any case, have fun.
To answer your question: There are lots of overnight parking options in Tarifa including parking on the street. Our rental car was parked for 3 days on the street without any problems. Enjoy your trip and enjoy Valencia (we quite like this city). Hasta la vista!
Bob, THANKS SO MUCH! Exactly what I needed to know.
We just returned from Tangier. We spent the night in Tarifa, then caught the 9:00 AM boat. Parking is no longer free next to the dock, and the ring road circling old town is under construction next to the dock. The ferry terminal is under renovation as well, and the ticket window was hard to find. We found a parking garage just north of the wall of old town, just off of Ave de Andalucia, that charged 18 Euro per day. Look for the big, blue "P" sign. The garage looked new and seemed secure. Our car was safe overnight. It's an easy walk to the dock from there.
I found a tended parking lot in Tarifa, a couple blocks east of where they are rebuilding an east gate and wall. It closed at 10pm so I only parked there a short while (worried that dinner would run later than that) and found free parking further east down the same street in front of apartment buildings. We didn't go to Tangier - as has been said, it's like going to Tijuana and saying you went to Mexico - but liked Tarifa more than we thought we would.
