We will be spending part of a day in Bratislava (a saturday) - we want to tour the old city and the christmas market. Can anyone recommend a convenient and safe place to park our rental car?

You shouldn't have any problem finding parking in Bratislava. It's not nearly as congested as most other European cities. We were surprised to find a huge modern mall down on the riverfront, and I'm sure they have parking there. The Old City is just up the hill from there--not far.
We love the city, and found it a nice place to rest up between our visit to Budapest and Vienna which is only 39 miles away. We heard no German spoken there, and it's a world apart from Vienna--but so close.
