We would like to train from Paris to Lucerne, is there a direct service, is it a scenic trip please ?
We would then like to travel to Modena in Italy via the Gotthard Pass, is this possible, how many changes ? Many thanks
Bridie, AFAIK, there are no direct (no changes) trains from Paris to Lucerne. There will always be at least one change. The easiest route is TGV (300 kmH) from Paris Est or Gare de Lyon to Basel and then transfer to Swiss Rail for the trip to Lucerne. I've travelled that route, but don't remember how "scenic" it is? The trip from Lucerne to Modena will be slightly longer, about 6 hours. One of the shortest trips is a departure at 09:18, arriving at 15:13 (time 5H:55M, 2 changes at Arth-Goldau and Milano Centrale, compulsory reservations on last two legs). I believe that's the route you're looking for? Happy travels!
Thanks for such a prompt, and informative reply.
We would prefer Lucerne to Zurich , but I guess Zurich would be more straight forward, from Paris, and on to Milan, then Modena ?
You have to make at least one change from Paris to Luzern, either Basel or Lausanne. To Modena there is one train each day with a single change in Milan. It goes under the St Gothard Pass through a very long tunnel.
To find train schedules and routings (if not prices) for your routes, follow this advice: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/db_tips.htm
Bridie, Lucerne is a nicer place to visit than Zürich (IMO), regardless of whether the rail journey will be more "straight forward" from Paris.
