Paris to Verona - via Switzerland???

We are going to Paris in June and hope to travel to Verona. Is there another really good country in between that we might want to visit if we are traveling by train? Milan is out of the way, isn't it? Anyway. We'd love to see Switzerland. Is it on the way to Verona ? We thought we might stop for a night in another lovely city. Thanks!

Oh yes, it is definitely right on your way, and an overnight stopmis a great way to break up the trip. I suggest Luzern, a charming little city onna lake, surrounded by mountains. Paris to Luzern takes about 4 1/2 hours, with a single change on the way. To continue to Verona, you first take the train to Milan. Luzern to Milan is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours; the train from there to Verona is 1 hour 20 minutes. We did this in 2010, coming from Zurich instead of Luzern, but it is the same train. You would meet it at Arth-Goldau. The good news is you can buy discount tickets in advance on the SBB website, saving about 50 CHF per ticket. If you have an extra night to spend on the way, you could travel from Luzern up to Rigi by boat and cable car. Spend the night up on Rigi ( made famous to English-speakers by Mark Twain's visit) and the next morning take the cogwheel train down the other side to Arth-goldau to meet the train to Milan. This is a nice Swiss adventure. Verona is very nice. We spent 2 nights there in June 2010 and had a great time, including seeing Aida in the arena. Let me know if you would like restaurant suggestions.
