Trying to choose between an overnight train from Paris to Venice (in a private car for three) or flying. Recommendations?
Terri, My preference on that route would be a budget flight. For example, EasyJet operates both from CDG and ORY, with a flight time of 1H:40M and fares currently as low as €29.99. I haven't checked, but that's likely cheaper than travel by train. Note that the fares will vary, depending on when you book and several other factors. There will of course be some added "fees". With a budget flight, you'll have to be concerned with luggage weights, carry-on rules, etc., but it will likely be an easier trip. Happy travels!
The transfers were really using for this part of our trip. For the Orly-Paris part, the three of us took a cab, as it was simpler (and about the same price) as public transport. Total cab fare was $25 for the three of us, but keep in mind we were traveling at noon and traffic was not bad. In Venice, the ATVO bus goes from Venice Marco Polo airport to the train station and back many times a day. I think each one-way ticket was about 5 Euro.
Thank you for all the great advice!
Terri-
I pondered that exact thing for a trip we took last June. I went with EasyJet. It was hundreds and hundreds of dollars cheaper for the three of us and a really short flight.
And don't forget to factor in the cost of getting to the Paris airport and getting to you accommodation in Venice from the airport, in addition to the price of a plane ticket. The train will leave from the center of Paris and arrive in Venice.
