This spring my husband and I are planning to take the Rick Steves 7 day tour of Paris. Afterwards, we would like to make a side trip to see the castle Neuschwanstein in southern Germany. Does anyone know the best way to get there from Paris, and then back to the Munich Airport to fly home? Thank you all for your help.
Look up schedules on the German Rail website. There are high speed train connections from Paris to Augsburg, a little west of Munich, from which you can go south on regional trains to Fuessen and the castle. With advance purchase you can get discounted tickets for these connections, all the way to Fuessen, for as little as €39 per person. Fuessen to Munich airport can be done with a Bayern-Ticket (does not need advance purchase) for €29, for both of you.
In 2010, our family (4) rented a car (in advance in US) and picked up at Orly since I figured it was easier to get in and out of smaller airport than CDG. We took the metro to Orly, picked up the car, and had a great time. No problem getting out of the city and went through corner of Switzerland, Austria and stayed in Rick's suggestion of Reutte. We drove to Dachau, Rothenburg etc. flying out of Frankfurt. It was so easy and we would definitely do it again. We are used to driving alot in the U.S. We downloaded the Europe maps (not cheap) on our GPS and it worked beautifully. So much easier than just using a map. I would definitely recommend it. Of couse, our family of four made it more economical than train travel, might not be as good a deal for two.
