We will be staying n Paris for a month this fall. We would like to take a four days side trip to Interlaken. What's the best way to get there via which trains? Also estimated costs? The various websites seem difficult to get a good answer for all the trains and options. We will be living close to Montparnasse train station so we can book tickets there easily. Also any suggestion on mid price hotels or B&Bs? AND finally we want to do something up to one of the higher mountain villages. Thanks and if you ever plan to come to the mountains of central Mexico ask us.

The best runs of the day that I see are the 06:15 , 08:23 or 10:23 departures from Paris-Lyon to Interlaken Ost. One train change at Basel. Trip takes 5hrs 13min. There are other trains but the journey is longer and there are up to 3 train changes. Regular fare is 124.40Euro as shown on www.tgv-europe.com. You can also buy this ticket on www.rail.ch. This is the Swiss train website.
We have taken that route. Beautiful scenery. Enjoy!
Thanks to you both
The standard 2nd class fare for a TGV from Paris to Basel plus a regional train from Basel to Interlaken Ost is €160.40. Booked well in advance (up to three months allowed) on tgv-europe.com, you can get a Piccolissimo discount fare for the Paris-Basel TGV leg and pay a total fare of only €77.40.
As mentioned, the Paris Gare de Lyon - Basel - Interlaken route seems to be the most direct route I'm actually booked on that route for late September...book NOW if you want to get decent rates, as I've noticed the fares have already increased almost 25% since I booked my tickets last month...and book directly through the French TGV site, not RailEurope.....
As for higher mountain villages, Murren and/or Wengen would be good choices...I'm actually going to Murren for 3 nights..
