Anyone have experience with Paris to Barcelona travel? I'm debating cheap airfair (Ryan Air) or looking into the train. I've taken Ryan Air before (Venice to Paris) and its a bit hectic given that they fly to out of the way airports. Any personal preferences? The train seems long (and much more expensive) but given the out of the way airports and Ryan Air's iffy schedules, any experiences would be great. Thanks.
Fly Easyjet which goes from Orly and not Beauvais and direct to Barcelona's main airport (rather than whatever place RyanAir goes to). That way I would say you clearly save a lot of time over the train.
Cool, thanks for the reply. My preference is to fly to save time. The train does hold some appeal as I haven't done much train travel in Europe (only Amsterdam to Paris). Is there anything worthwhile between Paris and Barcelona?
As for the trains, I did a quick search on http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en for schedules which showed about an 11 hour transit time. I probably don't have the correct train stations in my query. Which train stations showed a 9 hour transit time? I'm especially amicable to 9 hours if its overnight.
Thanks again!
There is also a direct night train between from Paris Austerlitz to Barcelona Sants. Departs 8pm arrives 9:30 am.
There's no 9 hours overnight. I'm seeing the same overnight Michael found, 0 changes, 13 hrs overnight. The 2 TGV departing 1320 are 9 hours. You're asking if there is anything worthwhile between Paris and Barcelona?? All of France south of Paris, starting with the Loire Valley, Dordogne, slightly to the east Provence, the Languedoc....
Okay, I've spent time in Amboise, Sarlat and Arles in South France. Anything outside of those that should be visited?
Oh, and Carcasonne. I really liked Carcasonne and Sarlat. I'm interested in train stops in those two cities or other cool cities I haven't been to before (either France or Spain). Basically, I'm interested in overnight train travel, or train travel with the option of interesting day stops between Paris and Barcelona. No more than 2-3 days travel though.
My daughter and I are flying Easyjet this Fri from Paris to Barcelona. It's about a 90 min flt. You can take the RER B line from either Chatelet/Les Halles or the quieter Gare du Nord. The B line goes to both CDG and ORY. It's 8,20euro. My daughter went to school here in Paris the past 3 months and the kids used Easyjet rather than Ryan Air. Be aware though that the Metro doesn't start running until 0530. If you have a very early flight, you will need to take a taxi to ORY. Do check in online the day before with Easyjet.
I decided to fly since we only have 4 days in BCN. We will take the overnite train to Florence and again back to Paris. Hope this helps...I know it's a little long winded..heehee
This again raises the whole issue of "journey" travel vs "destination" travel. I personally prefer ground travel because it gives me a chance to experience both the geography and culture/living conditions of the country. Since big cities are so much the same in every country I would feel that I missed a lot if I just flew from one to the next.
Thanks for the detailed info Cathy!
