Paris RER B question

If my train arrives in Gare L'Est and I want to take the RER B to the Left Bank/Notre Dame area, do I need to walk to the Gare Nord or does it stop at the east station also? (I can't tell from the map, but the stations don't look all that far apart.)

If walking is required, does anyone have directions for a safe transition?

Rather than back-tracking to Gare du Nord, you can take Metro line 4 (direction Porte d'Orléans) right to the Cité stop on Ile de la Cité (Notre Dame) or the next one, St. Michel, for the Left Bank.
