Paris or London?

Am in early stages of planning a trip for Oct. 2025. Will be in Angers, France. Typically, I would get to CDG the day before my flight home. However, I am now flying Oneworld instead of SkyTeam (who I've flown with for the past 10 years or so.), which means no more non-stops to California*. If I fly home from CDG to either LA or San Diego, I'd want to take a sort-of early (08:00ish) flight to LHR, then home. If, however, I just took the train all the way to London (LHR) the day before coming home, I could just take the non-stop flight home that leaves around noon.

I know the basics--the train trip to London will cost a lot more, I'll have to enter/exit the UK, I'll have to change stations in Paris (I'm fine navigating the metro with the bags I'll have). I know it makes for a much longer train-travel day, but the appeal of a single flight that leaves around noon--instead of an early wake up and two flights--is strong. I also know that flight times that far out are not even set in sand, much less stone, and could change markedly.

I'm very comfortable arriving/departing/connecting at CDG, but have never set foot in the UK. I've researched what the connection at LHR would be if I chose the one-stop itinerary. I know I could go a few days early to spend some time in the UK, but that's not in the cards for this trip.

Am I nuts? Is there anything I don't know that would help me decide which way to go? Has anyone ever done this?

I thank you in advance for any insights!

*I am aware of the Air Tahiti Nua flight, but that would have me driving south on the 405 at the beginning of rush hour. No Thanks!

No, you're not nuts. Not at all. That is certainly not a bad option and I could see myself doing the same thing. And there are worse places than London to spend a night in.

I am personally always in favor of non-stops! I would be taking the train and probably overnight at a hotel At LHR.

Others would suggest an overnight in central London and tube to LHR the next morning. I can recommend the Pullman a block from Kings Cross/St Pancras if you want to overnight in London. There is a Premier Inn across the street if that better suits you. I haven’t stayed there but it gets fine reviews. That location is right by Eurostar arrival and easy access to tube lines. You could have a quick look at some London spot that strikes your fancy before bed. Tube to LHR from Kings Cross/St Pancras is easy the next morning.

I’m a lifetime frequent flyer. You’re now flying one world instead of Skyteam. And you’re having to spend money on a train to London or take connections, etc. Why?

IMHO you pick the airline that has the best flight and price combination for you. It’s time to quit chasing status. It’s time to quit being loyal to any carrier. The grass is only greener on the other carrier Group because it’s different manure. Trust me I’ve been elite on a lot of carriers. It’s not any different.

I'm with Carol - Air France/Delta or Air Tahiti Nui.

I'd choose a bit of rush hour traffic over a connection at LHR any day of the week.

By that time the people mover should be operational at LAX, which could enable you to park at Union Station and take the train to/from the airport, avoiding the 405. Or you could travel by rail all the way from Dana Pt.

If, however, I just took the train all the way to London (LHR) the day
before coming home

This will be (at least) 3 trains and transfers, right. First, get to the Eurostar in Paris from Angers. Then the Eurostar itself. The get from the Eurostar endpoint in London to LHR.

Thank you to all who offered their opinions. I appreciate it!

By that time the people mover should be operational at LAX,

Sadly, no. The last update I saw was...

"The Passenger Service Availability in the January 2024 Project Schedule Update is December 8, 2025."

I'd love to have a timely, public-transit option to LAX. Maybe someday...
