I am trying to figure out how to get around Paris. Sometimes the best way to get from one place to another seems to require transfering from the metro to the RER and back. Is this possible? Will the 10-ticket carnet work for that, or what kind of ticket will be necessary?
Within the city the RER functions just like the metro and your 10-ticket carnet is good. Yes, you often have to transfer between one and the other.
Thank you very much!
Julie, have a look at parisbytrain.com
So long as you don't want to go too far out of central Paris (Versailles or Saint-Denis, say), you can change between metro and RER lines at no charge with a single ticket from your carnet.
My husband and I went to Paris last year and I was a little nervous about navigating around Paris. We bought the 10 packet of carnet tickets and off we went......It took us only a few minutes and we figured it out. Within Paris you can take the RER, Metro and Bus. The only time we had to buy separate tickets was to go to Versailles. It was a lot easier than I thought and we traveled all over Paris without getting lost once (at least regarding the metro system)
I read, and experienced it ourselves, that each ticket is good for 90 minutes after you first used it; so hang onto it! You'll need it to also get OUT of the station in alot of stations; so hang onto it! Keep them handy!
Also, sorry just thought of this after I pressed enter. Be sure to take the 'BaboBus' up and down the Seine! I'm telling you it was so much better to see Paris' landmarks slowly pass by and you sit back and enjoy the sun and sights you cannot see in a dark subway. We used it less than we should have... ahhh, Paris...
