Trying to get my family of 5 from France-FRA Flughafen economically. Would it work to take the Thalys Paris-Koln for 39Euros for all 5 - their Adult & Co fare? Then what? Should we stay in Koln for the night(Sunday) or take a train the morning of our flight? Thanks for the planning help.
If you book in advance online from the German Rail website, Paris to Frankfurt can be as low as €39 on the TGV (or ICE), direct via Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, and Mannheim.
Laurie,
If at all possible, I would strongly suggest avoid taking a Thalys train from Gare du Nord; no need to go through Belgium; from what I see you don't need to go Cologne anyway since you're taking the more southerly route from Gare de l'Est to Frankfurt Hbf. I would avoid taking the TGV to Frankfurt, unless you have to arrive at a particular time. If not, take the ICE train, stay over in Frankfurt, take the S-Bahn with Wiesbaden as the terminous to the airport the morning of your flight.
Laurie, I just booked this trip. I found that the Deutsche Bahn website gave me a better reduced fare than the SNCF site for the days we're travelling. (You can book and purchase this trip on either site -- I guess because it's a direct train between the two.)
I checked both, though, to see which was better -- it can go either way.
