I am trying to book an overnight train from Paris to Barcelona on the night of January 2, 2014, but the search results come up empty. The more I look into it, the more it looks like there is no more overnight train between the two?? Is there anyone who can confirm or help? Thank you!
The night train on that route has been cancelled as there is now new day-time high-speed trains connecting both cities directly.
The German Rail website does not show a night train for that date. There is an 11½ hr night train to Irun, on the Atlantic end of the France-Spain border, then a train across to the to the Mediterranean side, but the total trip takes almost 24 hours.
Laura,
The quickest and most efficient route from Paris to Barcelona will be a budget flight. Is that something you might consider?
Good luck!
As Andre says, the Elipsos Trenhotel services have been cancelled after 15 December, when direct daytime TGV services begin. Booking today for the 2nd or 3rd of January will cost €170, because all the cheaper seats have already sold out. At the end of January I can see one-way tickets for as little as €59.
There is lots of information about these trains and the new services from Barcelona to French cities on The Man in Seat 61 news page, and many more details on the newly updated Paris to Barcelona page.
There is a night train from Paris that goes to Perpignan and on to the border town of Cerbère. It leaves Paris Austerlitz at 21:57 and arrives at Perpignan at 7:20 and Cerbère at 8:12. There are trains from both towns to Barcelona, perhaps more frequently from Perpignan. Personally, I'd rather take the TGV or fly.
