I have an option to take a flight on Delta from ATL to Athens in May with a 1 hour layover in Paris. Is this enough time to make the connecting flight?
Probably not--CDG is one of the busiest airports and several security checks involved
OK I'll be honest. You could no more make a transit from CDG to Athens in an hour than I could sing on Broadway and tap dance like the late Gregory Hines. Goodness girl, have you EVER had a flight that left on time and got to the arrival gate on time. Yes, probably, but not often. Oh, and screw any checked luggage. So, plan on at LEAST a three hour layover. CDG is actually pretty nice....have a glass of wine and relax. Athens airport also very nice and good English speaking(and Japanese) travler's helpdesk.
I had a longer layover than that in CDG to transfer from a Delta flight from ATL to an Air France flight to Cairo and barely made the flight - it was frantic. After deplaning, we had to go downstairs and get on a bus to take us to who knows what terminal, wind through long, long hallways with no signage whatsoever until we go to another door where crowds of angry people were waiting for bus transfers to other terminal. No bus came for a long time, and then the first few that came were mostly full. We finally got on a bus, which took us to the needed terminal. I think a lot of this was due to construction, but it was nuts. I think it took most of two hours.
On the way home, my mother had injured her knee and we had a wheelchair escort from plane to plane - what a relief - but she still had to get out and go through security again somewhere in that process.
My opinion - one hour would be impossible unless ALL stars align or you need wheelchair escort.
I see that your CDG-Athens flight is on Air France. AF is notorious for scheduling tight connections at CDG. If this is all on one ticket and you miss your connection, then Delta and Air France are responsible for getting you on their next available flight from CDG to Athens. There is one at 14:10. If I were you, I'd book the 14:10 flight to begin with. Then you don't have to worry about missing your connection, only to find that the 14:10 flight is sold out.
Thanks for the help everyone. My instincts told me that it was not enough time. I have flown to Athens a number of times and never had a problem making connecting flights in Europe but I always had a very, very long layover! I still have a few days to book and a few more options. Maybe a connection at JFK or Amsterdam instead of CDG. I really wanted to avoid JFK but CDG sounds like a nightmare! I don't know about AMS. I have heard good things about KLM flights so I may try them.
I would never trust it! AF put my husband & I on a connecting flight from Nice-CDG-LAX and we had one hour, fifteen minutes. We couldn't even think about catching the shuttle we literally had to run from one terminal to the next to make our flight.
