We are flying Vueling Airlines June 22 from Venice to Madrid, 12noon. Does anyone know how long it takes to get from Padua to Venice Airport? Or does it just make sense to stay in Venice? I hear that is a nightmare!
It's never a nightmare to stay in Venice. However, it can be problematic when you stay on the island and have a 6:00am flight out of Venice-Marco Polo. This forces the use of a water taxi at a minimum 100Euro ($145) to get you there on time.
Padua is a 20min-30min train ride to Venezia Santa Lucia on the Venice island. From there, you have to vaporetto (or 15 minute walk over canal bridges) to Piazzale Roma where you can pick up the #5 bus to the airport.
Venezia Mestre is 12 minutes closer to Padua but I'm looking at the land bus schedule and map and I don't see a run from the train station to the airport. Only the #5 from Piazalle Roma will get you to the airport. It doesn't go by the Mestre station as best I can see on the map.
Thanks for the info, I think we will stay in Padua. And I am sure Venice is actually a dream, just thinking logistics and such. We will be visiting Venice!! Can't wait!
Rick's Italy guidebook says there are hourly buses from Padua to Marco Polo airport, leaving 05:25-22:25. Says it costs 5 euro plus 1 euro per bag and takes about an hour.
That is good to know, that would work fine!
