If we are travelling with backpacks,do we need pack covers for airlines to keep the straps hidden?
Are you checking your bags or carrying them on?
Joe, if your Backpack doesn't have the capability of stowing the harness straps, it's a really good idea to secure these in some fashion so they're not damaged by airport baggage equipment. I've seen some cases where airlines will "Saran Wrap" the entire pack, to keep the straps out of the way. This is a bit tough to remove at the other end (considering knives or scissors are inside the checked bag).
If you haven't bought a Backpack yet, you might add that to your selection criteria. Some models (Eagle Creek, Rick Steves) have zippered panels to stow the harness. I use a 2003- vintage EC Pack that has this capability, and the concept works well.
Some travellers place their entire Pack inside a large Trash Bag, and I've seen a few that pack a large Duffel to store their pack in. There are a variety of methods to deal with the situation.
Good luck!
Id agree with Ken... I noticed some very affordable basic-duffel bags that would work well and economically and fold down to a few oz. This way any straps you have would be secure if you have to check the bag. Carry on if you can (if its not a big one!) Check out REI.com - the folding OUTDOOR brand or any other decent sized duffel should work. Trashbags may be ok for a rainy day... but id invest in a decent cover that costs $25 and is more reliable/reusable for rain!
We will not be checking any bags if we can help it...I saw those pack-duffels on the REI site and decided that those would probably be our best bet. Thanks for the replies everyone.
