Oyster v. Travelcard

OK, I've read previous postings, Rick's books, the websites, etc., and I just can't quite figure out what I should do. Here's our plan. We're in London for 6 days, inclusive of our in/out flights at Gatwick. Most of our time will be in zones 1 and 2 though we want to take a trip out to the family burial grounds near Epping (zone 6). Our other day trip will be to Windsor. We walk a lot so I don't know that we'll use the Tube "excessively". Do I get a 7 day Oyster? How do I address the trip out to zone 6? I guess if I make a mistake, it's only money...

Thanks in advance!

Since you plan to walk a lot, you could load enough pounds on Oyster cards to use them as pay-as-you-go cards for all zones in which you will travel. The Oyster computer will sort everything and give you the best deal. Here is a quote from the Transport for London site:

"If you use Oyster to pay as you go on the Tube, DLR, London Overground and some National Rail services, the system will look at your journeys in a 24 hour period (from 0430 and before 0430 the next day) and the amount you pay will be less than the price of an equivalent Day Travelcard. If you also use buses or trams during this period, these trips will be included in this price cap. Our aim is to ensure that Oyster always charges the lowest fare. Where it doesn’t we will refund the difference."

If you decide to get seven-day travelcards for zones 1-2, load them on Oyster cards and load a few more pounds to cover your trip to zone 6 and back.
