Will be getting into London (by train) on a Wednesday, late afternoon, and leaving London (by plane) from Heathrow on Saturday, early afternoon. In the interim, would like to get around London on the Tube (zone 1) for Thursday and Friday, and then out to Heathrow (zone 6) on Saturday morning. What would work best and be the best value: a 3-day Travel card, or an Oyster card or what?
I read through the brochure on Oyster cards on the tube web site. It said that the Oyster card was more economical because there is a maximum you can pay each day with the Oyster card, then travel is free. The maximum is generally lower than the daily rate for any Travel Card. Plus, you have the added flexibility to use the card whenever it is convenient.

Deb, if you can't find the brochure online, email me and I will attach the copy I downloaded:
Yes, I found a brochure on all the different cards and rates...very confusing. From what I could figure out, getting 1-day travel cards or oyster cards would actually be least expensive. Would either one of these cards be good for getting me to the airport on Sat morning (by Tube)?
If I'm not mistaken, another advantage of the Oyster card is that you can recharge it anytime you visit London again without the initial fee. We were told to keep ours from our trip last summer. I haven't looked into it further though.
If you were to use a travelcard to get to LHR, it would need to cover zones 1-6. I suggest that you buy Oyster cards and load £20 on them. The Oyster computer will not let you pay more than 50 pence less than the cost of one-day travelcards for Wednesday-Friday. It will give you a discount on the single fare from London to LHR on Saturday. You can top off the card with more pounds, as needed. If you don't want to save the card for a future trip, you can get your deposit back at the airport.
